The cylinder block casting supplier (Defiance Casting Facility) asked for a slight design change to increase the right front oil pan rail cast locator pad size by 0.5 mm. This will allow the front step on the cast locator to line up with a core parting line. This will remove 0.5 mm from the casting (see attached). The current 0.5 mm feature is difficult to machine and maintain in the tooling, due to the small fillets and long cutters required. The location of the core parting line was not known to the product designer when the cast locator features were designed (unique to Defiance casting). This change is an opportunity to optimize the design for robust castability. This change was approved on the weekly Defiance, GM Powertrain, Isuzu/GMIDEL conference calls for the 2010i MY and has been incorporated into the first set of tooling for 2010i MY Beta 2 blocks. However, the 2010 437 tool designs require an update along with the 2007 917 designs.
