Over compression of the Belleville washers in the tooling results in thicker foam, tooling flash, assembly issues, and ultimately casting scrap. The Belleville washer is only designed to compress 75%. When a foam is cycled accidently inside the mold tooling, it crushes the belleville, ruining the washers, and impacts tooling performance. In the current design, the Belleville washer when over compressed, is the positive stop. Change the design of the Belleville locating plates so that the plates become the hard stop when the tool is over compressed. See the Attachment. This concept, with some minor modifications for different tool types, can be applied to all tooling with Belleville Washers. This will reduce assembly issues caused by bad prints due to thick foam. Thick foam results in casting scrap caused by popped gates / sand wash in. Foam scrap may also occur and steam leaks as a result of crushed Belleville's. This will also help to eliminate steam leaks which can blow at the operator.
